Civil Society presentations at UN First Committee 2011

Civil society organisations addressed the UN General Assembly First Committee on 25 October. Michele Poliacof of IANSA commended the positive impact of the PoA in the last 10 years, and highlighted how civil society organisations have used the PoA in their work to prevent gun violence. However, she said, the PoA and states’ commitment to it must be strengthened. Looking forward to the 2012 Review Conference (RevCon), she urged states to work towards a strong outcome document that includes aspects of the PoA that have a direct impact on gun violence, such as including ammunition in the scope of the PoA, addressing gender perspectives, enhanced border controls, and closer partnerships with civil society, as well as making the International Tracing Instrument and the PoA itself legally-binding". Jeff Abramson of Control Arms spoke on the need for a strong Arms Trade Treaty that includes small arms and ammunition within its scope.
