Brazil: Committee to promote gun control in São Paulo becomes permanent

IANSA member Instituto Sou da Paz celebrates the decision to make a group it has led since 2010 to coordinate the city’s gun control plan into a permanent official body of local government in São Paulo, Brazil. The group, now named the Committee for Gun Control and Disarmament, is coordinated by Sou da Paz in cooperation with a wide range of partners, including the City Hall, police, army, religious groups and other civil society organisations. It has already achieved important results as Alice Andres Ribeiro of Sou da Paz said, "This integration is extremely innovative and shows that cooperation between civil society and government can bring great results and inspire public policy. The institutionalisation of the group will surely contribute to making the city even safer, and with fewer guns in circulation".
