Jamaica: Government destroys 4,000 guns, half a tonne of ammunition

In Jamaica, about 4,000 guns and half a tonne of ammunition have been destroyed in two events organised by the government with support from the UN Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC). Minister of Security Peter Bunting said the destruction exercise was part of efforts to implement the national action plan on combating the illicit trade of weapons. He added, “[We consider] these actions important first steps towards effectively monitoring and regulating the number of firearms available for illicit use. Gun crimes represent a major threat to the safety and security of our society”. To complement these efforts, 60 government officials are participating in a UNLiREC training course on the implementation of international agreements including UN Programme of Action on small arms (PoA) and the International Tracing Instrument (ITI).
