Syria: Campaigners call for arms embargo on Syria to stop human rights abuses

Amnesty International is calling for the UN Security Council to impose an arms embargo on Syria to prevent further human rights abuses against peaceful protesters in the country. More than 3,000 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of anti-government protests in March this year, most of them unarmed protesters and bystanders shot by the security forces and army. The UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials state that, "Law enforcement officials, in carrying out their duty, shall, as far as possible, apply non-violent means before resorting to the use of force and firearms", and continues, "Exceptional circumstances such as internal political instability or any other public emergency may not be invoked to justify any departure from these basic principles".
