El Salvador: Police seize 12 guns per day

Police in El Salvador have seized an average of 12 weapons per day so far in 2011. According to Hugo Ramirez Mejia, Deputy Director of Public Safety, a total of 3,915 firearms were seized between January 1 and November 15. Salvadoran police are working with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on tracing guns that have been confiscated by police. 85% of homicides are committed with firearms in El Salvador, where more than 400,000 guns are estimated to be in circulation. FESPAD, an IANSA member in El Salvador, is campaigning alongside other organisations for a ban on carrying guns in the country.
