Belgium: Call for review of EU arms export controls following arms transfers to Middle East and North Africa

EU Member States issued export licences for small arms to Libya at a total value of almost €100 million in 2009, according to the new report ‘Lessons from MENA – Appraising EU transfer of military and security equipment to the Middle East and North Africa’. It was launched at an event during a meeting of the EU Working Party on Conventional Arms Exports (COARM) in Brussels on 10 November. An Vranckx, one of the authors, said, “The huge volumes of arms which have been exported from EU countries to authoritarian regimes … clearly demonstrate that the EU’s arms export controls are not working well. The upcoming review of EU export control policy provides a much needed opportunity to rectify this problem”.
