Liberia: IANSA members campaign for peaceful elections

IANSA members in Liberia are campaigning for peaceful elections under the slogan “Ballots, not Bullets – Be the Peace!”. It is the country’s second presidential election since the end of a bloody civil war in 2003, and civil society is active to ensure a fair and peaceful outcome. Michael S Yorwah of the Center for Democratic Empowerment (CEDE) reports that civil society has formed an Election Coordinating Committee (ECC), that monitors the election process across the country. Kerian Pelenah of Liberians United to Expose Hidden Weapons (LUEHW) said, “Politicians must be mindful that we (Liberians) are not prepared to be plunged into another brutal civil conflict. Already, the country is grappling with the problems of illicit small arms, gender-based violence and cross-border insecurity. Post-election violence and threats of violence must be stopped now”.
