US: New polls show support for strengthening gun control

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition of more than 550 Mayors in the US, has announced the results of five state polls showing that large majorities of the public - including gun owners - support stronger background checks to be performed on everyone who attempts to purchase a gun. The polls from Arizona, Ohio, Colorado, Virginia and Indiana, conducted by Democratic and Republican polling firms, also show strong majority support among gun owners for tougher gun laws. Co-chair of the coalition and Mayor of New York City, Michael R. Bloomberg, said, “Every day, 34 people in the US are killed with guns - as of today nearly 1,800 since the shooting in Tucson, Arizona - because of serious gaps in our nation's gun background check system".
