Turkey: aerial shooting kills 3 at wedding

3 people were shot and killed when a bridegroom in the south-eastern Gaziantep province of Turkey lost control while firing an AK-47 in celebration at his own wedding last week. The guests were sprayed with bullets and the groom's father and two aunts were killed, while 8 were injured. Shooting into the air is commonplace as a celebration in parts of Turkey and has on many occasions led to deaths and injuries. In 2008, after 44 people were killed when gunmen entered a wedding party, Dr Ayhan Akcan of the Umut Foundation stated “When firearms are widespread, and the gun is identified with bravery, and seen as a normal part of everyday life, slaughters like this take place. Instead, we should work towards a social structure where the law supports people’s right to live in peace.”
