Nigeria: WAANSA calls for coordinated action

The Nigerian section of West African Action Network on Small Arms has expressed concern about the government’s recent inauguration of a national task force in response to the proliferation of small arms in Nigeria. “We are worried about the proliferation of new agencies and committees while existing bodies established in line with the ECOWAS Convention on small arms are not provided with the sufficient resources to function properly” said President of WAANSA-Nigeria, Orji Dickson. The National Committee on the control of small arms and light weapons which was established under the ECOWAS regional framework was not consulted about the establishment of such a task force. According to Dickson, “it is crucial that the government acts on its commitment to the Convention and coordinate its efforts to fight the current problem of illegal firearms in Nigeria”.
