Honduras: Armed attacks have intensified

Immediately following the inauguration of Honduras’ President Porfirio Lobo on 27 January, armed attacks against journalists, teachers, union leaders and opposition politicians have increased, said human rights organisations in Honduras. Just this month, three journalists were shot dead and numerous activists have been detained. CIPRODEH, an IANSA supporter organisation in Honduras, said: “we urge the government to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into the recent wave of killings and threats against journalists, teachers and opposition leaders so that the culprits can be brought to justice. The increase in gun violence shows how urgent it is to produce legal and judicial reforms in Honduras, including strengthening the outdated firearms law, to combat impunity and eradicate once and for all armed violence in our country.” For more information, visit www.iansa.org
