Italy: Questions asked over military support sent to Haiti

On 19 January Italy sent its largest warship, the aircraft carrier Cavour, to support relief operations in earthquake-devastated Haiti. The Italian Disarmament Network is asking the Ministry of Defence to make public the nature, timing and cost of this operation. The Minister said that the operational costs of the aircraft carrier amount to €200,000 a day, which will be mostly funded by private companies. IANSA member Francesco Vignarca said: “The private sponsorship of a ‘humanitarian mission’ involving military equipment and personnel is something new in Italy and it needs to be implemented with the highest levels of transparency.”  More
