UN ATT Signing Kit

The UN has created a signing kit on the Arms Trade Treaty, setting out the procedure for States to sign, ratify and accede to the ATT.  It includes short templates for governments to fill in, and a chart explaining how the ATT comes into effect. The kit is available in English, French and Spanish.

Second Review Conference of the UNPoA

The Second Review Conference for the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons (UNPoA), is about to commence at the UN Headquarters in New York, 27th - 7th August, 2012.

Joint Policy Paper on Gender and the Arms Trade Treaty

Four international organisations and networks - Amnesty International, the IANSA Women's Network, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and Religions for Peace - have united to support the inclusion of a gender criterion in the ATT. 

United Nations: Dedicated Arms Trade Treaty website now live

The dedicated United Nations website on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) negotiations went live on 7 June: www.un.org/disarmament/ATT/. This website serves as the primary information platform regarding the historic United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, which will take place in New York from 2 to 27 July.

Australia: Article on guns, sports and masculinity

Jocelynne Scut, IANSA Women’s Network supporter, wrote an article entitled 'Is the Problem Facebook? Guns, Sport and the Macho Mentality', on the current debate in Australia surrounding two Olympic swimmers who put images of themselves in a Californian gun shop up on facebook and twitter. Kenya: Press conference on the Week of Action

The Kenya Action Network on Small Arms (KANSA) held a successful press conference at the Hilton Hotel Nairobi on the Global Week of Action and the ATT. The event was covered by journalists from almost twenty print and electronic media outlets in Kenya and was aired by Citizen Television. KANSA is also organising a community dialogue event in Huruma on Friday and prayer meetings on Sunday.

DR Congo: Discussion on the links between UN Security Council 1325 and the fight against gun violence

CJR/1325 (the Centre for Studies on Justice and Resolution 1325), IANSA member in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is holding a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister to advocate for the implementation and ratification of the Kinshasa Convention. The Centre has also launched a debate on how to link implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security with the fight against gun violence.

Burundi: Radio broadcasts calling on government to support a robust Arms Trade Treaty

The Colonie des Pionniers de Développement (CPD), IANSA member in Burundi, is working with local media, including the African Public Radio and the National Public Radio of Burundi to raise citizens’ awareness of the issues of gun violence and the importance of the government’s support for a strong Arms Trade Treaty.

Rwanda: Students discuss gun violence

Bethesaida, IANSA member in Rwanda, led a training workshop to discuss the means to reduce the misuse of SALW and organised debates with women in the area of Kigali. They are also working with pupils from the schools of the district to think about SALW and issues related to gun violence.
