UN Small Arms Process

20 June 2014

The final meeting of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of the States considered agenda item 10, the consideration of the Final Draft Document. Chairman Tanin introduced the oral revisions and editorial changes that would ensure the consistency of the document. Chairman Tanin asked the delegates for their consensus in the adoption of the Final Draft Document, and it was so decided. The floor was then opened for statements after the adoption.

19 June 2014 - Morning Session

The seventh meeting of the BMS5 was called to order by Chairman Zahir Tanin and began with statements by international, regional and non-governmental organisations.

18 June 2014 - Morning Session

The 5th meeting of the BMS5 was called to order by Chairman Zahir Tanin. The session broke up for delegation consultation then reconvened to discuss international cooperation and assistance.

17 June 2014 – Morning Session

The third meeting of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of States was called to order by moderator, Anthony Simpson, of New Zealand. This session debated on the implementation of ITI for states to identify and trace small arms and light weapons and their ammunitions in a timely manner as contained in document a/conf/192/bms/2004/1. Two brief presentations were made on the related topic as proposed by the chair.

16 June 2014 – Morning session

The morning session was opened by the Deputy High Representative of Disarmament Affairs, Virginia Gamba.  She recalled that while over the past years there have been major achievements, member states still faced daunting challenges and hundreds of thousands of lives across the globe were destroyed by guns. Illegal guns created crime, conflict, threatened international aid workers and impeded development.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

On International Women's Day, the Coalition for Gun Control in Canada and a wide range of organisations promoting women's safety continue their fight for the national long gun registry.

IANSA Women all over the world are celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March, highlighting the campaign Disarm Domestic Violence, and calling for the inclusion of references to gender based violence in the Arms Trade Treaty.

The Arms Trade Treaty

An article about the Control Arms campaign written by Luis Gutierrez-Esparza of CLAEI, an IANSA member in Mexico, has been published on the website Guru Político.

On 3 November, Fundació per la Pau and the International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) held a meeting on ‘Analysis Tools on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT)’.

The newly elected IANSA International Advisory Council (IAC) held its second teleconference meeting on 19 October. The meeting focused on priorities for IANSA in 2012

The US, Russia and European countries have supplied large quantities of weapons to Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Syria and Yemen since 2005, despite evidence that there was a substantial risk that they could be used to commit serious human rights violations.

The trial against arms broker Viktor Bout begins in New York, US, on 11 October. Bout was arrested in 2008 for trying to sell arms to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

The Global Week of Action against Gun Violence 2012 will take place from the 11-17 June. Every year, activists from all over the world join the Week of Action, demonstrating the strength of the global movement against gun violence.

Colonie des Pionniers de Développement (CPD), an IANSA member in Burundi, has published a new report outlining their activities in the second trimester of 2011.

The Caribbean Institute for the Rule of Law (ICED), an IANSA member in the Dominican Republic, has released the results of a survey on the impact of firearms in domestic violence against women.

From 22-28 June, IANSA member Mur-Africa Universel held a series of successful events in the Central African Republic, including meetings with military officers, the Muslim community, a Catholic and a Baptist Church.

The Conflict Analysis Resource Center (CERAC) in Colombia allied with local urban artist DjLu in the creation of a mural in Bogotá for the Global Week Of Action Against Gun Violence. The goal was to reach as many people as possible with the message: "In the game of war, nobody wins".
